چکیده

Biomedical research has a need to use nonhuman primates in cases where no other species offer the specific scientific information required or the necessary predictability of results for the development of medicaments and vaccines. Biomedical research would prefer purpose-bred animals of known history, with an amount of background information necessary for the interpretation of findings from animal experiments. However, the existing breeding centres cannot completely fulfil the requirements of biomedical research and for some species no breeding centres of importance have yet been created due to the difficulty in predicting requirements and the high investment costs of such an endeavour. Therefore, a certaineventually diminishing-demand for feral animals will continue in the near future. However, even such animals should be delivered in good health and after a quarantine period at the supplier institution. Most of the large breeding centres for macaques at least exist in Asia, Mauritius and to a certain extent in the USA. Breeding

FELASA guidelines for education of specialists in laboratory animal science (Category D). Report of the Federation of Laboratory Animal Science Associations Working Group on Education of Specialists (Category D) accepted by the FELASA Board of Management.

Outside Europe there are reference publications, which are internationally recognized, such as The Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, which deal with training, qualifications and veterinary and operational responsibilities in an animal facility (NRC 1996).These same topics are also essentially those that form the basis of the European guidelines for Categories A-D, which FELASAha...

FELASA recommendations for the health monitoring of breeding colonies and experimental units of cats, dogs and pigs. Report of the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) Working Group on Animal Health.

The health of an animal is always at risk from a variety of infections. Infections in animals, whether clinically manifest or subclinical may, when the animals are used in biomedical research, produce effects that change the outcome of the experiments undertaken. Depending upon the specific infection a variety of biological parameters may be affected such as behaviour, growth rate, relative org...

P-50: Elongating and Elongated Spermatids Manufactured In Vitro from Non-Human Primate Pluripotent Stem Cells

Background: We have recently shown that human embryonic (hESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) can differentiate into advanced spermatogenic cells including round spermatids by in vitro culture (Easley et al., Direct differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into haploid spermatogenic cells. Cell Reports 2, 440-446 2012) and also, in collaboration, that rhesus spermatogonial ...
